Chris has been one of the most in demand private guitar tutors in Canberra ACT for over 10 years. Having moved there in 1996 to study with Mike Price at the ANU Jazz Department he has gone on to build a solid reputation as player and teacher among the local scene. In both 1997 and 1998 he placed in the top 5 of the Ike Isaacs International Jazz Guitar Awards alongside James Sherlock and Carl Dewhurst, both nationally respected jazz artists. He now teaches both at the Canberra Grammar School and also at his own private studio, which has produced some outstanding students who are now becoming professionals themselves. He is also currently the Music Director at National Capital Church in Forrest, where he not only runs all things musical, but you will also find Strauss amps being used ever week.
Chris is a ‘toneaholic’.......which while it may not be a word, is a very real condition which many players suffer from. This causes guitarists to spend hundreds of dollars on amps and pedals to find that perfect sound, locking themselves in their studios for hours while they try different pickup/amp/pedal/guitar combinations, and are often a nuisance to the very tolerant staff at the local music stores......... not to mention the hours they spend on Youtube watching other ‘toneaholics’ demo their latest gear.
Chris discovered Strauss Amps late in 2008 and immediately knew he had found something that was going to be a massive addition to the amp market in Australia. In his own words
‘ one of the best sounding amps I have heard.... If you like a good classic rock amp with a very musical drive channel, or an amazingly rich clean sound that you can use pedals with, then check these out!’
2009 will see Chris release the start of a series of instructional material which will contain years of experience as both a teacher and improviser of contemporary music. Having studied everything from Charlie Christian to Van Halen, along with his ability to relate theory in a practical way to players of all styles, this material will be a must have for any guitarist. Chris has also begun writing material for his long awaited debut CD which he hopes to release early next year which will feature guest artists, including the outstanding Australian guitarist Brett Garsed (www.brettgarsed.com)
Chris currently plays the SVT-30 and the SVH-30 with the 2X12 Cab.
